The Gehry Residence, a single-family home in Santa Monica, California, originated as a 1920 Dutch colonial bungalow that Frank Gehry radically transformed beginning in 1978. After purchasing the pink structure in 1977, Gehry wrapped the existing house in a striking new exterior composed of unconventional materials—chain-link fencing, corrugated steel, plywood, and wood framing—while deliberately leaving portions of the original walls visible. He added tilted glass cubes to selected facades while largely preserving the rear and south elevations. Though sometimes cited as an early example of deconstructivism, Gehry himself rejected this classification. The residence's bold experimental approach provoked neighborhood opposition but became influential in architectural discourse. Gehry retained ownership until his death in 2025, intending to keep the house within his family despite building another residence overlooking Rustic Canyon.
