Located at the junction of Main, West Main, and Ellicott streets in downtown Batavia, New York, the Genesee County Courthouse Historic District comprises the civic heart of a city central to the early settlement of Western New York. The district encompasses the county courthouse, a war memorial, and other government buildings spanning the 1840s to 1920s, several of which were originally constructed for private use. Reflecting Greek Revival and Renaissance Revival architectural styles, the ensemble represents both federal and municipal authority and constitutes the administrative core of Batavia, which served as the hub from which the Holland Purchase—encompassing all of present-day Western New York—was subdivided and settled in the early nineteenth century. The district was recognized and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, one of two historic districts in the county.
