The German Literature Archive in Marbach am Neckar, founded in 1955, is a literary institution of international significance housed in a brutalist structure designed by architect Jörg Kiefner. Located in the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller, the archive preserves literary and intellectual materials spanning from 1750 to the present, holding nearly 800,000 volumes and over 1,000 journals accessible to scholars engaged in source criticism. The complete institution encompasses not only the archive itself but also the Schiller-Nationalmuseum, the Museum of Modern Literature, and the Collegienhaus, a residential and research facility. Its departments include Manuscripts (with the Cotta Archive), Library, Pictures and Objects, Museum operations, and administrative divisions.
