Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1940, the Grande Hotel of Ouro Preto stands in the historic mining city of Minas Gerais, Brazil, representing one of the architect's early modernist works. Commissioned by SPHAN (the precursor to Brazil's National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage) in consultation with architect Lúcio Costa, the hotel was part of a deliberate effort to establish Ouro Preto as a tourist destination while preserving its colonial heritage. Niemeyer's modern design was selected over a competing proposal by Carlos Leão, introducing contemporary architectural language to a city celebrated for its baroque past.
