Great Dixter, an English country house in Northiam, East Sussex, was built between 1910 and 1912 by architect Edwin Lutyens through a distinctive act of architectural synthesis. Lutyens combined an existing mid-fifteenth-century house already standing on the site with a similar timber-framed structure relocated from Benenden in Kent, augmenting both with his own contemporary additions. The resulting Grade I listed building is equally celebrated for its gardens, which are Grade I listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and have long been renowned for their continuous tradition of sophisticated plantsmanship.
