The Great Mosque of Brussels, designed by Ernest Van Humbeeck and erected in 1897 in the Parc du Cinquantenaire, was originally conceived as an exhibition attraction. Built in Moorish style, the structure was repurposed as a Muslim place of worship in 1978 when Saudi Arabia transformed and managed it for four decades. From 2019 to 2023, the mosque operated under the Muslim Executive of Belgium. As a prominent religious and educational institution within Belgium's Islamic community, it has served as both a spiritual center for Muslim diplomats and a destination for religious conversion, while also functioning as an intended diplomatic bridge between the Saudi and Belgian monarchies.
