Located at 187a Elizabeth Street in Sydney's central business district opposite Hyde Park, the Great Synagogue is a heritage-listed structure designed by Thomas Rowe and constructed between 1874 and 1878. The building, which extends to Castlereagh Street, synthesizes Byzantine Revival, Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival, and Moorish Revival architectural styles. Stonework was executed by Aaron Loveridge with stone carving by Thomas Wran. Home to the oldest Jewish congregation in Sydney, the Orthodox synagogue serves around 550 families and conducts daily services featuring a professional choir on Shabbat and festival mornings. Beyond its liturgical function, it provides pastoral care, adult education, and hosts important communal Jewish events. The synagogue was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 10 September 2004.
