Guards Cemetery at Windy Corner, near Cuinchy in northern France, was established in 1915 at a significant road junction held by the British army during the First World War. Designed by architect Charles Holden, the cemetery is now maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and contains 3,443 burials, of which 1,246 have been identified. Among those interred is Major John Mackenzie, a Victoria Cross recipient from the Anglo-Ashanti wars of the nineteenth century, whose grave marks the cemetery's connection to Britain's broader military history.
