Hallgrímskirkja, the largest church in Iceland, rises 74.5 metres above Reykjavík in a striking expressionist and Gothic Revival design by architect Guðjón Samúelsson. Completed in 1986, this Lutheran parish church of the Church of Iceland is distinguished by its dramatically curved spire and flanking wings, which have made it an enduring symbol of Icelandic national identity. The building is named after Hallgrímur Pétursson, a seventeenth-century Icelandic poet and cleric known for his Passion Hymns.
