Hasištejn Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in Bohemia near Kadaň, built in Gothic style around 1340, probably by Friedrich of Schönburg to guard the route from Prague to Saxony. Seized by Václav IV of Luxembourg in the early 15th century and granted to the Lobkowicz family, the castle achieved greatest prominence under Bohuslav Hasištejnský z Lobkovic, a humanist poet and traveller who made his home there from 1503 until his death in 1510. During this period, Bohuslav assembled an exceptional library exceeding 650 volumes, drawing visiting scholars and reformers including Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. The castle declined after his death, suffering further damage from fire in 1560, though its tower and walls endure as ruins today. It became state property under Communist rule before reverting to the Lobkowicz family after 1989.
