Karlštejn Castle, a large Gothic fortress founded in 1348 by King Charles IV near Prague, was designed to serve as a secure repository for the Imperial Regalia, the Bohemian crown jewels, holy relics, and other royal treasures. Built in the Gothic architectural style, the castle was constructed under the direction of architects including Matthias of Arras and later Josef Mocker. Its strategic purpose as a royal stronghold and treasury made it one of the most significant fortifications in medieval Bohemia. Today, Karlštejn ranks among the Czech Republic's most famous and frequently visited castles, holding designation as both a national cultural monument and a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site.
