Landštejn Castle stands in Staré Město pod Landštejnem in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Built in 1222 and first recorded in written documents in 1231, this Romanesque fortress was the largest of its architectural style in the Czech lands at that time. Two large towers connected by a wall define the upper castle and its courtyard; the six-story southern tower, fully preserved with a western gate, serves as the main tower. Among the oldest and best-preserved Romanesque castles in Europe, Landštejn is recognized as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
