Hepner Hall, the oldest building on the San Diego State University campus, stands at the original entrance to the university as an iconic symbol of the institution. Completed in 1931 and designed by Howard Spencer Hazen, senior architectural designer of the California Division of the State Architect, the structure exemplifies Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival architecture. Positioned north of Malcolm A. Love Library at the entrance to the Campanile Walkway and main quad, Hepner Hall houses the School of Social Work, the Department of Gerontology, and the University Center on Aging, alongside faculty offices, research centers, classrooms, and lecture halls. The building is listed as a contributing property on the National Register of Historic Places.
