Het Nieuwe Huis, an "American style" apartment building designed by Barend van den Nieuwen Amstel and completed in 1928, stands at the Roelof Hartplein in Amsterdam's Oud-Zuid district. Built to house wealthy bachelors for whom accommodation was scarce, the concrete structure contains 188 small to medium-sized apartments arranged around an interior courtyard, with a branch of the Public Library of Amsterdam situated beneath it. The playful façade, marked by curves and staircase windows, reflects the influence of the Amsterdam School movement. Located within walking distance of Amsterdam's museums precinct, the building has remained largely devoted to its original purpose, continuing to offer affordable housing primarily for single residents since its inception. The building was designated a Rijksmonument in 2004.
