The Hippodrome of Constantinople was a circus that served as the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Derived from the Greek words for horse and path, the structure hosted the popular chariot and horse racing that characterized urban life across the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine worlds. Today, the site survives as Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul's Fatih district, preserving the footprint of a venue that once anchored the empire's public life. The square is also known locally as Atmeydanı, or "Horse Square," reflecting its ancient purpose.
