The former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, located in the El Guinardó neighborhood of Barcelona, is one of the largest complexes built in Art Nouveau style. Designed by the prominent Catalan modernisme architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, with Pere Domènech i Roura, the hospital was constructed between 1901 and 1930. Its distinctive plan comprises twelve pavilions connected through long underground galleries within an expansive green space, unified by rich materials including stained glass, ceramic glaze, and brick. The complex functioned as a hospital until 2009, when a new facility opened nearby. In 2014, after restoration, it reopened as a museum and cultural center hosting international organizations including the WHO and UN-HABITAT. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (designated in 1997 alongside the Palau de la Música Catalana) and listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest, Sant Pau stands as both an architectural masterpiece and an active hub for cultural and social programming.
