Designed by Frank Freeman and completed in 1889, the Hotel Margaret was a Richardsonian Romanesque structure that rose in Brooklyn Heights as the neighborhood's first skyscraper and its tallest building for years. The hotel stood until 1980, when it was destroyed by a fire that began during renovations when a worker left a heater unattended near taping compound.
