Huis Doorn, a manor house in the town of Doorn in the Netherlands, preserves a remarkable moment of early twentieth-century history within its walls. Originally built in the thirteenth century and rebuilt after destruction in the fourteenth, the structure was substantially reconstructed in the nineteenth century to its present form, with gardens designed during that same period. The house gained international significance when former German Emperor Wilhelm II purchased it following World War I and lived there in exile from 1920 until his death in 1941. Now a national museum and Rijksmonument, the residence maintains its interiors exactly as they stood at Wilhelm II's death, offering an intimate portrait of his exile years. The emperor is buried in a mausoleum within the gardens, which continues to draw German monarchists annually in June. Seized by the Dutch government as enemy property during World War II, Huis Doorn has since become one of the Netherlands' distinctive historical monuments, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
