Il Redentore, a 16th-century votive church designed by Andrea Palladio, rises 48 meters above the waterfront of the Canale della Giudecca on Venice's island of Giudecca. Built beginning in 1577 and constructed of brick, the Renaissance structure was commissioned to give thanks for the city's deliverance from plague. Its commanding position dominates the island's skyline and contains paintings by major Venetian artists including Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Francesco Bassano.
