On the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice's lagoon, this Benedictine church rises in brilliant white marble as one of Renaissance Italy's most iconic compositions. Designed by Andrea Palladio and constructed between 1566 and 1610, the basilica embodies the classical proportions and serene geometry that defined Palladio's architectural philosophy. Positioned directly opposite the Piazzetta di San Marco, its luminous façade gleams above the lagoon waters and commands the view from the Riva degli Schiavoni, serving as a focal point in Venice's most celebrated vistas. The church is designated both a minor basilica and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing Venice's historic center.
