Located in McAlester, Oklahoma, the International Temple serves as the worldwide headquarters for the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, a Masonic organization founded in the city in 1922. Designed by the Tulsa architectural firm Black and West and completed in 1951, the building exemplifies Moderne design. Conceived as both a memorial to the Order's founders and a shrine for its rapidly expanding membership—which had grown from an initial class of 86 to 50,000 members by 1940—the structure was constructed by the Dewey Loveall Construction Company following approval of funding in 1950. The cornerstone was ceremonially laid on May 2, 1951, and the temple opened to the public that November, becoming an important institutional landmark for the fraternal organization.
