Designed by Kishō Kurokawa and opened in 1992 in Nara's Takabatakechō district near Shin-Yakushi-ji, the Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum of Photography houses a comprehensive collection centred on the life and work of photographer Irie Taikichi (1905–1992), whose approximately 80,000 photographs form the museum's core. The collection also includes 1,025 Meiji and Taishō-era glass plates by pioneering photographer Kudō Risaburō (1848–1929), designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and works by photographer Tsuda Yoho (1923–2014). Originally called the Nara City Museum of Photography, the institution was renamed to honour Irie Taikichi, whose prolific career spanned the twentieth century.
