The Itamaraty Palace, also known as the Palace of the Arches, is the headquarters of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brasília. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on April 21, 1970, this modernist structure stands on the Ministries Esplanade east of the National Congress building. The building's most striking feature is a gravity-defying spiral interior staircase. Legendary Brazilian landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx collaborated on the project, creating the palace's gardens. Now protected as a heritage asset by IPHAN, the building exemplifies Brasília's mid-twentieth-century modernist architecture and has become so emblematic of the foreign ministry that "Itamaraty" is used metonymically for the institution itself.
