Built around 1875 in Lafayette, Indiana, the James H. Ward House exemplifies the exuberant architectural tastes of the Gilded Age through its blend of Italianate and Second Empire styles. The two-story brick dwelling features a distinctive 3½-story mansard-roofed tower, deep overhanging eaves with decorative corner brackets, and asymmetrical massing that creates visual dynamism across its facade. An ornate semi-hexagonal projecting bay, rising two stories, adds further complexity to the composition. A contributing carriage house accompanies the main residence on the property. The house was recognized for its architectural significance when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
