The Jenkins House in Bastrop, Texas, is a historic residence built around 1836 for Sarah Jenkins, whose life was marked by tragedy—her first husband was killed by Indians, and her second fell at the Battle of the Alamo. The structure evolved substantially over time, beginning as a modest single-room log cabin before expanding into a two-room configuration with a characteristic dog-trot passage between the rooms. A kitchen and dining ell were subsequently added, and the dwelling was further transformed through enclosure of the dog-trot as a central hall, installation of clapboard siding, and the addition of a full-length front porch, ultimately achieving its present Victorian appearance. Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964, the Jenkins House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1978.
