Built in 1939 by native Oregon architect John Yeon, this historic house in Portland represents one of a series of nine speculative residences constructed between 1938 and 1940 in Lake Oswego and Portland that followed Yeon's critically acclaimed Watzek House of 1936. The modern structure pioneered innovative design features including modular construction, the early use of external plywood as a building material, and separate ventilation louvers that allowed fixed-pane glass windows to be set between vertical mullions—a system that would influence residential design broadly. Yeon, recognized as one of the originators of the Northwest Regional architectural style, combined practical innovation with regional sensibility in these speculative houses. The John Yeon Speculative House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 1, 2007.
