Kalmar Castle stands in Kalmar, in the province of Småland, Sweden. Its origins lie in a defensive tower built around 1180, and under the Vasa kings in the 16th century it was transformed into a Renaissance palace, today regarded as the best-preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic countries. Long known as "the Key to the Kingdom" for its position near the former Danish border, it was also where the Kalmar Union, joining Denmark, Norway and Sweden under one monarch, was formed in 1397.
