Demolished or destroyed.
Tre Kronor Castle stood on the site of present-day Stockholm Palace in Sweden, believed to have originated as a citadel built by Birger Jarl in the mid-thirteenth century and subsequently developed into a royal residence. The castle acquired its name—meaning "Three Crowns"—during the reign of King Magnus Eriksson in the mid-fourteenth century. It remained a seat of Swedish royal power until a devastating fire in 1697 destroyed the structure along with most of Sweden's national library and royal archives, an loss that severely compromised the documentation of the nation's early history.
