Opened in June 1995 in Kobe's Harborland waterfront district, the Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel rose just six months after the Great Hanshin earthquake devastated the city. Designed by Takenaka Corporation to evoke a luxury liner, the fourteen-story structure contains 331 rooms and has become an iconic presence in Kobe's skyline, frequently appearing in photographs alongside the nearby Kobe Port Tower. The hotel changed ownership in 2006 when Japan Hotel REIT Investment Corporation acquired it for ¥11.4 billion.
