Kórnik Castle, located in the Polish town of Kórnik, originated as a medieval fortress in the 14th century before undergoing a dramatic neogothic transformation in 1855. The remodeling was undertaken partly according to architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel's designs for Tytus Działyński and his son Jan Kanty Działyński. Following Jan Kanty's death, his brother-in-law Count Władysław Zamoyski inherited the castle and, shortly before his own death in 1924, bequeathed it to the Polish state along with an extensive art collection and the adjacent Kórnik Arboretum. Today the castle serves as both a museum and houses the Kórnik Library, and has been designated an official national Historic Monument of Poland since 2011.
