Kotva Department Store stands in Prague's Old Town at Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square), an imposing brutalist structure completed in 1975 by architects Vladimír Machonin and Věra Machoninová. Named after an older neighboring building—"kotva" meaning anchor in Czech—the department store became a member of the International Association of Department Stores from 1993 to 2000. Now recognized as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, the building exemplifies the bold concrete and geometric vocabulary of brutalist architecture that defined central European commercial design in the post-war era.
