Liebenstein Castle stands in the Ilm-Kreis district of Thuringia, Germany, as a heritage monument with roots reaching back to the 12th century, when the counts of Käfernburg established it. The counts' ministeriales, the lords of Liebenstein, served as castellans of the fortress. During the 16th century, the castle underwent extensive reconstruction before later being exploited as a quarry for building stone.
