The Lighthouse of Colonia, erected in 1857, stands on the ruins of the Saint Francis Xavier convent in the historic district of Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. This structure occupies a site layered with religious history, its stones rising from the remains of an earlier colonial-era convent. Designated a Cultural Heritage Monument, the lighthouse exemplifies the nineteenth-century repurposing of historic sites, transforming sacred ground into a navigational beacon for the Río de la Plata estuary.
