Erected in 1828 on Flores Island in the Río de la Plata near Montevideo, Uruguay, the Isla de Flores Lighthouse stands as one of the region's most historically significant structures. Positioned between Montevideo's coast and the treacherous Banco Inglés shoal, it was built to guide vessels through hazardous waters that threatened the Port of Montevideo. The lighthouse's construction came at a remarkable cost: under the Tratado de la Farola, Uruguay ceded the territory of Misiones Orientales to Brazil in exchange for its construction, earning the structure the distinction of being known as "the most expensive lighthouse in the world." Before serving its primary navigational purpose, the island hosted a colonial-era slave reception station; it was later repurposed as a sanitorium.
