Located in Zhengding County, Hebei, Linji Temple is a Chinese Buddhist sanctuary and the birthplace of the Linji school, one of the five major schools of Chinese Buddhism, founded by the Tang-dynasty monk Linji Yixuan in the mid-Tang era (618–907). The temple's influence extended to Japan when two Japanese monks, Eisai and Shuniyo, brought the Linji teachings there during the Song dynasty (960–1276), establishing the school as a cornerstone of Japanese Buddhism as well. The temple's most ancient structure, the Chengling Stupa, retains architectural features characteristic of the Liao and Jin dynasties (916–1234). Recognized as a National Key Buddhist Temple in Han Chinese Area since 1983, Linji Temple remains a significant monument to the development and dissemination of East Asian Buddhist thought.
