The Main and Military Plazas Historic District in San Antonio preserves the site of the original Presidio San Antonio de Béxar, where Spanish military forces and the provincial governor were stationed. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and expanded in 2019, the district encompasses several significant structures including the Spanish Governor's Palace, the Cathedral of San Fernando (Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria y Guadalupe), the Bexar County Courthouse, and the Vogel Belt Building Complex, which has been restored for municipal offices. The district contains one or more National Historic Landmarks and reflects the layered architectural heritage of Spanish colonial and later American settlement in Texas.
