Manchester's war memorial stands in St Peter's Square, a Grade II* listed composition designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1924. Built from Portland limestone, it comprises a central cenotaph topped with an effigy of a fallen soldier, a Stone of Remembrance, and flanking twin obelisks—all characteristic of Lutyens' memorial vocabulary. The design incorporates relief carvings of the imperial crown, Manchester's coat of arms, and commemorative inscriptions, drawing on classical architectural language with abstract, ecumenical forms rather than explicit religious imagery. Raised steps flanking the Stone of Remembrance served as east-facing tribunes for colour parties during memorial parades. Manchester was notably late in commissioning its First World War memorial; the city council did not establish a war memorial committee until 1922, and the selection of St Peter's Square as the site—chosen for expediency over more contentious locations—required the cenotaph to be constructed around the sealed burial crypts of the former St Peter's Church and a memorial stone cross that remained undisturbed.
