Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled on 11 November 1926, the Northampton War Memorial stands on Wood Hill in the centre of Northampton, Northamptonshire. This First World War memorial, officially known as the Town and County War Memorial, features Lutyens's characteristic design elements: a Stone of Remembrance flanked by twin obelisks draped with painted stone flags, all set within a small garden on what was once part of the churchyard of All Saints' Church. Planning began shortly after the 1918 armistice, with a temporary wooden cenotaph erected on Abington Street from 1919 until the permanent structure could be realized. The installation was delayed six years while the site was purchased from the Church of England. Among England's more elaborate town memorials, it is now Grade I listed, a designation upgraded from Grade II in 2015 when Lutyens's war memorials were collectively recognized as a "national collection."
