A historic opera house in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the Mariinsky Theatre was designed by architect Alberto Cavos and opened in 1860. It emerged as the preeminent music theatre of late 19th-century Russia, hosting the premieres of major stage works by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Known as the Kirov Theatre through much of the Soviet period, it was restored to its original name and today serves as home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera, and Mariinsky Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Valery Gergiev.
