War Memorial Gymnasium stands on the campus of the University of Idaho in Moscow as a 2,500-seat multi-purpose arena honoring state residents who died in World War I. Completed in November 1928, the building exemplifies Tudor-Gothic architecture with heavy buttressing, designed by David C. Lange, head of the university's architecture department. Its distinctive brick and concrete exterior, set at approximately 2,600 feet elevation, is partially draped in ivy and ornamented with crouching football player gargoyles and stained glass windows. A west end addition was constructed in 1951–52, followed by a 1954 renovation. The gymnasium served as the primary home of Vandal basketball until 1976, drawing crowds as large as 3,800 during notable games in the early 1960s, and also housed a prominent boxing program in the mid-twentieth century. Today it serves as the home court for women's volleyball and continues to host basketball games, intramurals, physical education classes, and university commencement ceremonies.
