The Messeturm, or Trade Fair Tower, is a 63-storey, 257-meter postmodern skyscraper in Frankfurt's Westend-Süd district, designed by Helmut Jahn and completed in 1990. Constructed from reinforced concrete, granite, and steel, it held the distinction of being Europe's tallest building until 1997, when Frankfurt's Commerzbank Tower surpassed it. Now the second tallest building in both Frankfurt and Germany, and the third tallest in the European Union, the Messeturm stands near the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds yet functions as an office building rather than for exhibition purposes. Regarded as a design classic among European skyscrapers, it is one of the few German buildings with its own postal code, a status shared only with the nearby Opernturm and Zugspitze's summit station.
