Miramare Castle rises on the cliffs of the Gulf of Trieste in northeastern Italy, a 19th-century Gothic Revival fortress built between 1856 and 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium—who would later become Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and Empress Carlota. Designed by architect Carl Junker, the castle commands a dramatic coastal setting between Barcola and Grignano. Its expansive grounds encompass 22 hectares of cliff and seashore parkland, personally designed by the archduke and extensively replanted with tropical species, creating an exotic landscape that complements the castle's romantic architectural vision. Now an Italian national heritage site, Miramare stands as a monument to 19th-century European imperial ambition.
