Completed in 1954, the Montreal Building is a modernist apartment tower in downtown São Paulo, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and executed by Carlos Lemos. Sited on a narrow corner lot at Ipiranga and Cásper Líbero avenues, it was the first of Niemeyer's major São Paulo commissions, built for the Banco Nacional Imobiliário to address central city housing demand. The building's compact units—ranging from 36 to 48 square metres, many with trapezoidal floor plans—were aimed at single occupants and small families. Its north façade features horizontal brise soleil reminiscent of Niemeyer's contemporaneous Banco do Estado de Minas Gerais, while the entrance hall showcases three monumental mosaic panels by Emiliano Di Cavalcanti. Though the building's original shade devices facing both avenues were removed during a 2004 renovation, it remains a protected heritage landmark in São Paulo.
