The Califórnia Building stands on a prominent corner in São Paulo's República district, at the intersection of Barão de Itapetininga and Dom José de Barros avenues. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Carlos Lemos and completed in 1955, this mixed-use structure exemplifies a typology Niemeyer favored in the area: retail galleries occupying the ground floor with residential units stacked above. The building reflects the modernist architect's approach to urban infill, combining commercial vitality at street level with residential habitation, a strategy also evident in his nearby Copan and Eiffel buildings.
