The five-story Montreal City Hall, designed by Henri-Maurice Perrault and Alexander Cowper Hutchison, stands in Old Montreal between Place Jacques-Cartier and the Champ de Mars as the seat of local government. Built between 1872 and 1878 in the Second Empire style, it represents one of Canada's finest examples of that architectural tradition and was the country's first city hall constructed exclusively for municipal administration. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984, the building remains a landmark of Quebec's architectural heritage.
