The Monument to the Fallen Italians in Africa is a Fascist-era work of rationalist design, sculpted and designed by Romano Romanelli and dedicated to Italians who died during the Ethiopian War (1935–1936). Originally commissioned in 1938 for shipment to Addis Ababa in 1940, the monument's transport was prevented by the Second World War. It was eventually assembled in the 1960s on the seashore of Syracuse, Sicily—a choice reflecting the city's historical role as a major embarkation point for Italian troops bound for African campaigns. The monument is now recognized as Italian national heritage.
