Located on Pécs's main Széchenyi square, this Ottoman-era mosque—now the Downtown Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary—stands as one of Hungary's most significant surviving Turkish monuments. Built between 1543 and 1546 by Pasha Qasim the Victorious during Ottoman rule, the roughly hundred-step-square structure exemplifies Ottoman architecture with its characteristic forms and spatial design. Following the Habsburg-Hungarian reconquest, the building was converted to Catholic use in 1702, though its transformation was not complete: the Jesuits dismantled the minaret in 1766, yet the edifice retains substantial Turkish architectural features that continue to define the city's downtown character.
