Built in 1461 by Zagan Pasha, an Ottoman military commander and Grand Vizier of Albanian origin, the Zagan Pasha Mosque stands in the city center of Balıkesir in northwest Turkey as the largest mosque in the city. Constructed of ashlar masonry in Ottoman style, the square-plan structure features one main dome surrounded by four side domes separated by vaults, with three porches supported by marble columns and double-winged wooden doors on the north, west, and east facades. A minaret rises from the northwest corner, donated by a notable local family. Originally part of a complex including a tomb and hammam, the mosque and tomb deteriorated by 1897 and were rebuilt in 1908 by Governor Ömer Ali Bey. The structure gained historical significance in 1923 when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk delivered his famous "Balıkesir Khutbah" there shortly after the Turkish War of Independence. The courtyard contains fountains and a tomb, with a sundial marking the southern side.
