Mount Clare, the oldest Colonial-era structure in Baltimore, Maryland, is a Georgian plantation house built in 1763 by Charles Carroll the Barrister on a Carroll family estate. The five-part plan mansion exhibits the hallmarks of Georgian architecture, though with some alterations over time. Carroll, a barrister and descendant of the last Gaelic Lords of Éile in Ireland, was a distant relative of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1890, the City of Baltimore acquired a large portion of the estate for use as its third major landscaped park. The National Society of Colonial Dames in Maryland has maintained the house since 1917. Recognized for its architectural significance, Mount Clare was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark the same year.
