Mount Pleasant is a two-and-a-half-story brick Georgian dwelling near Upper Marlboro in Prince George's County, Maryland, built between 1764 and 1785 by John Waring. The house exemplifies a distinctively Maryland architectural tradition: the English gambrel-roofed brick dwelling, characterized by a steep gambrel with dormers set almost flush with the roof's second pitch. Originally constructed as part of a 451-acre tract, the standing structure is now about two-thirds its original length. As a modest mid-Georgian house, Mount Pleasant represents an unusual survival of domestic architecture more modest than grand contemporary estates like Montpelier, and likely preserves earlier architectural traditions more faithfully than the Palladian country houses that dominated wealthy Maryland estates. The property contains the Waring family burial ground.
